PLANNING FOR LANDSCAPE RESTORATION : SMART AGROFORESTRY APPOARCH SUMMER COURSE INSTIPER YOGYAKARTA 2024
The Summer Course INSTIPER Yogyakarta 2024, in collaboration with CIRAD –
Under Talent Program and supported by Suistainitiate, invites approximately 50 lecturers,
researchers, practitioners, and students from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia to
Tanjungsari Sub-district, Gunung Kidul Regency, Special Province of Yogyakarta
"The intend of holding the INSTIPER Yogyakarta 2024 Summer Course is to prepare
highly qualified landscape planners. The target is that this program will continue, eventually
producing managers of sustainable landscapes in various regions," said Dr. Agus Setyarso,
from the Center for Sustainable Landscape Science, as speakers.
The opening of the Summer Course INSTIPER Yogyakarta 2024 was officially
inaugurated by the Regent of Gunung Kidul at the office of Tanjungsari Sub-District. The
Regent of Gunung Kidul delivered a speech emphasizing Gunung Kidul as one of the Karst
areas with functions in conservation, education, particularly for research, and as an economic
area. Tanjungsari, as a miniature geology of Gunung Kidul, holds immense potential.
Therefore, the Gunung Kidul Regency Government, in collaboration with INSTIPER, is
conducting this activity. The area's potential lies in its natural resources, community, arts,
culture, SMEs, and tourism.
"Gunung Kidul in terms of investment will certainly see development across various
sectors. However, we will certainly pay attention to various environmental aspects to ensure
they are preserved," said Mr. Sunaryanta, the Regent of Gunung Kidul.
"Farmers here strive hard to find sloping land for food crops because forcing
agricultural land development would damage the environment and lead to prolonged
disasters," said Prof. Ir. Chay Asdak, MSc., Ph.D., during a visit to the Agroforestry Goede’s
Stand . The farmers here wisely choose to plant teak, albasia, and acacia on land considered
critical. Besides serving as long-term savings, this is also tangible evidence, this is also
concrete evidence, as mentioned by Prof. Ir. Chay Asdak, MSc., Ph.D.
The Summer Course INSTIPER Yogyakarta 2024 has selected two locations in
Kelurahan Ngestirejo. The first is a visit to the Central Patilo in the Cabean hamlet and the
Education Tour at the Grenhouse Lelaki Sintal. Both locations are considered smart
agroforestry initiatives, utilizing vacant land as productive conservation media that can
generate ideas or innovations within the Gunung Kidul karst area.
Patilo, a cultural heritage since 1990, has its uniqueness not only in its natural
preservation process without the use of preservatives but also in the recycling of its waste
water for irrigating red onion farms, albeit after short processing. The Greenhouse Lelaki
Sintal, with land of 700m2 and 750m2
, is considered to have optimal synergistic potential.
There are various sectors including fish farming, animal husbandry, poultry farming,
cultivation of rare plants and handicrafts.
Agung Nugroho explained, 'This educational tourism concept synergizes rare plant
cultivation, catfish farming, koi fish, muscovy ducks, arab chickens, canadian chickens,
bekisar chickens, saigon chickens from Bangkok, and many more.'"
On the final night of the event, Dr. Budi Wardana,as a representative from
Sustainitiate, also shared about Green Finance for Agroforestry, including tips for
participants seeking financing for field of green agriculture and forestry. This was discussed
in detail, funding sources, proposal preparation, and examples from national and international
institutions. The key requirement is a credible plan that is direct and easily understandable
by evaluators and reviewers."
At the end of the Summer Course training at INSTIPER Yogyakarta 2024, all
participants will receive a training certificate. Those who pass the competency test will be
awarded a competency certificate as landscape restoration planners."
