SUMMER COURSE

Planning for Landscape Restoration: Smart Agroforestry approach

Jointly organised by

Faculty of Forestry and Center for Sustainable Landscape Science, Instiper Yogyakarta

In Collaboration With Cirad under TALENT Program, and SALSA

Landscape was destroyed due to the over-exploitation of the resources. This is exemplified by the landscape of Bribin watershed, District of Gunung Kidul. The landscape and community were left in poorest conditions.

It should be noted, however, that restoration to the landscape has been repeatedly practiced in the area, mainly to conserve hydrological and soil fertility. A mixture between trees, horticulture, and food crops was applied, known as agroforestry scheme. At a surprise, communities slowly learned and started taking own local innovations to combine the vegetative and physical restoration practices with the need to improve the quality of livelihood. The old scheme of agroforestry has been unintentionally transformed into smart agroforestry. Agroforestry is not merely aimed at restoring soil and water regimes, but also addresses the need for increasing resilience of livelihood and promoting local economy, improving environmental parameters including climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity enhancement, and soil and water conservation.

The view of landscape today is a representation of successful restoration, and smart agroforestry is scheme that need to be framed into more systematic construction, and transferred widely to landscape operators, academician, and extension workers.

A Summer course on “Planning for Landscape Restoration Using Smart Agro-forestry Approach” is then organised.. Training curriculum is composed of i).. Bio-physical landscape Assessment; (ii) Smart Agroforestry (including climate, watershed, value chain, eco-tourism; green financing), and (iii) Planning systems for sustainable landscape
